Integrity Talk 9: Citywide Inclusive Sanitation – Better Projects through Integrity

29 Nov. 2023 • 14:00 - 15:30 • Online (Zoom)

In this Integrity Talk, we will discuss the future of sanitation and key challenges for Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS). We will focus specifically on how to keep services affordable and how to better regulate non-sewered sanitation, especially where enforcement and regulatory capacity are limited. Our esteemed guest speakers are: Christoph Luthi of EAWAG; Claire Grisaffi of WSUP; Tanvir Ahmed of ITN-Buet; Rohini Pradeep of CDD Society; and Bill Twyman of Aguaconsult.

This is integrity is co-hosted by the Water Integrity Network and the SuSanA.

Further Description / Program

In this Integrity Talk, we will explore what a Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) framework means, what it adds to the current sanitation debates and what its limitations are. We will also examine how an integrity perspective can strengthen CWIS across cities, and how it contributes to an understanding of affordability and inclusivity, responsibilities and regulation across the sanitation service value chain.

To ensure services for all, we must think outside the box, think beyond the pipes and the centralised network. This is core to the CWIS framework. In practice there are two major challenges that still need to be addressed to make the thinking a reality:
1 - How do we ensure strong standards for safe systems (both for users and sanitation workers) when regulation may be slow and enforcement unprepared?
2 - How do we make it all affordable and what does that mean for users and for service providers?

Let’s be real, to implement CWIS projects effectively, we still need to work out the best regulatory approaches for onsite sanitation and how to enforce them. Join us to discuss which transparency, accountability, participation and anti-corruption measures will be necessary for good regulation and stronger CWIS project
