Further Description / Program

For the past five years, the Rich Earth Institute’s annual urine diversion summit has brought together researchers, practitioners, policy makers, industry leaders, and students, catalyzing new collaborations and partnerships as we continue to grow the body of knowledge about this innovative practice.

This year, we’re bringing our conference online for the first time! We hope this will enable a much wider, global audience to participate in the discussion as we exchange ideas for the future of urine diversion. This 3-day gathering will feature presentations on the technology, regulation, design, culture, and art of urine reclamation as well as opportunities for networking and collaboration. Recordings will be available after the event.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Nancy G. Love
Sept. 15, 9:00 -10:30 am EDT
As Principal Investigator of the National Science Foundation’s INFEWS project: Advancing Technologies and Improving Communication of Urine-Derived Fertilizers for Food Production within a Risk Based Framework, Dr. Nancy G. Love will discuss this collaborative project and her vision for the future of urine diversion and reuse. Dr. Love is the Borchardt and Glysson Collegiate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University Michigan, and an adjunct Professor at the Institute of Biotechnology at Addis Ababa University. In collaboration with her students, Dr. Love works at the interface of water, infrastructure and public health in both domestic and global settings.

Admission By Donation
Members of the Container Based Sanitation Alliance (CBSA) provide access to dignified, safe, and affordable sanitation in dense urban areas otherwise lacking in options. This alliance includes Clean Team (Ghana), Loowatt (Madagascar), Sanivation and Sanergy (Kenya), SOIL (Haiti) and x-runner (Peru). During the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the significant challenges facing these providers, and therefore proceeds from this summit will go to support members of the CBSA.

Our Vision A world with clean water and fertile soil achieved by reclaiming the nutrients from our bodies as elements in a life sustaining cycle. Our Mission The Rich Earth Institute engages in research, education and technological innovation to advance the use of human waste as a resource. Through research, demonstration, and education projects, we strive to illustrate the positive effect of this approach in important areas including water quality, food security, energy use, soil health, economic sustainability, carbon footprint, public health, and emergency preparedness. We seek to bring together the knowledge of many disciplines and professions in order to create workable solutions. For this reason, the various perspectives of sanitary engineers, farmers, water quality advocates, businesspeople, agricultural scientists, and regulators are all represented among our board members and collaborators. The Institute was founded in 2011, and is developing quickly. Since 2012 we have been conducting controlled agricultural field trials using source-separated human urine as a fertilizer, and operating the nation’s first community scale urine recycling program. We are creating a regional system for recycling source-separated human waste back into agriculture, and serve as an intellectual hub for researchers, writers, professionals, and other practitioners who are exploring the intersection of agriculture and sanitation.
