Le changement climatique et ses effets s’observent dans de nombreux territoires avec des impacts majeurs sur le grand cycle de l’eau, comme la montée du niveau des mers, la perturbation des régimes pluviométriques, les sécheresses ou la survenue d’événements extrêmes.

Ces aléas climatiques ont des répercussions directes sur l’accessibilité et la continuité des services d’eau et d’assainissement. Du fait des vulnérabilités déjà existantes dues à la croissance démographique et à l’urbanisation, les impacts sanitaires, sociaux et économiques peuvent être amplifiés, en particulier dans les pays en développement et pour les populations les plus pauvres.

La prise en compte du changement climatique et ses effets est donc indispensable dans le développement des services d’eau et d’assainissement et d’autant plus urgente que l’inaction multiplie les risques futurs. À cet égard, l’adaptation et l’atténuation représentent deux démarches complémentaires qui permettent d’envisager différentes réponses pour réduire la vulnérabilité des services.

Une compréhension préalable des risques liés au climat et des enjeux sanitaires, sociaux, environnementaux et économiques est nécessaire pour agir. Ce guide synthétise les enjeux, définitions et clés de lecture pour guider les acteurs de l’eau et de l’assainissement dans l’intégration de ces éléments dans leurs pratiques.
