SFD (Level 2) Report - Gorkha Municipality Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) (2024)
Gorkha Municipality is situated in Gorkha District of Gandaki Province in the western region of Nepal. It is divided into 14 wards and covers an area of 131.86 sq. km. It was established on January 28, 2014 by merging 3 Village Development Committees (VDCs) namely, Gorakhkali, Raniswara and Taranagar. It lies at 27°56ʹ03ʺ to 28°13ʹ07ʺ N latitude and 84°23ʹ to 84°38ʹ E longitude and at the altitude from 328 meters above sea level (masl) to 1522 masl (Gorkha Municipality, 2024).
A population of 52,468 is residing on 14,988 households in the municipality (National Statistics Office, 2023). The annual population growth rate of the municipality is 0.63%. The municipality has a temperate climate (Cwa) with hot summers and dry winters. The annual average temperature of the municipality is 20.1°C and receives 1,492 mm rainfall per year (Climate-Data, 2021).
The SFD graphic shows that excreta generated from 84% of the population are safely managed, while 16% of the population are unsafely managed. The safely managed FS generated from 80% of population is temporary as the FS has not been emptied. The FS generated from 4% of population is only treated from biogas digester at households. With the current practice of faecal sludge management (FSM), the proportion of safely managed FS will soon become unsafely managed once the containments start filling up.
