Where does all the human waste go? Valentin Post, G. Anand, Rajkumar Sampath (2026)

Closing the Loop: The Final Chapter in FINISH Mondial’s Sanitation Journey
Paper 7 highlights FINISH Mondial’s journey from sanitation access to faecal sludge management, showcasing achievements, key learnings, and the shift toward a circular economy that transforms human waste into safe, valuable resources.

The release of Paper 7 marks a significant milestone in the Financing Sanitation Paper Series, bringing long-overdue attention to one of the most overlooked aspects of sanitation: faecal sludge management (FSM). Moving beyond toilets, this final paper confronts a critical question—what truly happens to human waste once it leaves households—and challenges the traditional “build and forget” approach.

Over the course of the series, FINISH Mondial has explored innovative financing, inclusion, and system design. Paper 7 builds on this foundation by quantifying impact and exposing gaps. With more than 2.2 million sanitation systems supported, FINISH Mondial now manages an estimated 5 million tonnes of human waste annually—an extraordinary achievement. At the same time, the paper transparently acknowledges that a small but significant portion remains unaccounted for, reinforcing the urgency of scaling FSM solutions.

The journey has been one of continuous learning. From promoting double leach pit systems to piloting faecal sludge treatment plants and co-composting models, FINISH Mondial has demonstrated that human waste can be transformed into valuable resources such as agricultural inputs. These efforts highlight the potential of a circular sanitation economy.

Paper 7 is not just a conclusion—it is a call to action. It invites partners, practitioners, and policymakers to rethink sanitation holistically and join the movement toward safely managed, sustainable, and resource-oriented sanitation systems.
