Chhatak Municipality is located within the Chhatak Sub-District (Upazila) situated in the Sunamganj District (Zila) under Sylhet Division. The geographical coordinates of Chhatak are 25°02'30.12"N and 91°40'30"E. It is bordered by the Indian state of Meghalaya and the Upazila of Companiganj (Sylhet) on the north, the Upazila of Jagannathpur on the south, the Upazilas of Companiganj (Sylhet), Sylhet Sadar, and Bishwanath on the east, and the Upazilas of Dakshin Sunamganj and Dowarabazar on the west.
According to the population census in 2011 by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the Chhatak city population was 44364 the urban population growth in Chhatak is 2.39% per year. Considering 10% floating population, such as farmers and traders coming to the city every day, the present (2023) population is estimated to be around 64,791.
The outcome of the SFD graphic shows that only fourteen percent (14%) of the excreta flow is classified as safely managed, and the remaining eighty six percent (86%) is classified as unsafely managed.
