O funcionamento das estações de lodo fecal e de tratamento de águas residuais raramente é
desenvolvido como descrito em manual ou livro didático. No entanto, pouco foi documentado
sobre os desafios práticos da vida real dos envolvidos. Essa lacuna limita a capacidade dos
planejadores e tomadores de decisão de tomar as decisões de investimento certas. Essa
coleção de estudos de caso torna acessível as experiências e realidades enfrentadas pelas
pessoas envolvidas na operação das instalações de tratamento, descarte e reutilização de
lodo fecal e esgoto, e as decisões que tiveram que tomar. Tal conhecimento pode informar a
seleção de tecnologias de tratamento adequadas às realidades contextuais esperadas.

A compilação destina-se a ser ilustrativa e não é exaustiva em todas as tecnologias disponíveis.
Cada estudo de caso descreve um sistema, seu propósito de tratamento, seu contexto
regulatório e o processo que levou à sua seleção. Além disso, são descritas as realidades,
desafios e oportunidades de operação e manutenção de cada tecnologia. Os estudos
complementam documentos técnicos orientados a processos existentes, fornecendo relatos de
experiências de campo com tecnologias de tratamento. Não é um manual para uma escolha
informada; em vez disso, é um recurso que pode ser usado durante processos de escolha
