World Bank – Water, sanitation and children’s health: evidence from DHS surveys
This paper combines 172 Demography and Health Survey data sets from 70 countries to estimate the effect of water and sanitation on child mortality and morbidity. The results show a robust association between access to water and sanitation technologies and both child morbidity and child mortality. The point estimates imply, depending on the technology level and the sub-region chosen, that water and sanitation infrastructure lowers the odds of children to suffering from diarrhea by 7-17 percent, and reduces the mortality risk for children under the age of five by about 5-20 percent.
The effects seem largest for modern sanitation technologies and least significant for basic water supply.

UNICEF, WHO, Water Advocates, Water For People, IRC, Emory University, Save The children, CARE, Water Aid and Dubai Cares as well as several other international partners are collaborating on a global campaign called “ Call to Action on WASH in Schools”. Experts from those agencies worked on a publication named “Raising Clean hands : Advancing health, learning and participation through WASH in Schools”. An advocacy and communication pack has been also developed for use at various levels. The Call to Action for WASH in Schools targets primarily global policy and decision makers in the education, health and water sector, worldwide press, corporations and foundations to promote the message that it is time to act to equip all schools with WASH in Schools facilities. Call to Action for WASH in Schools was launched on 6th of April at DIHAD (Dubai Humanitarian Aid Development Conference) in Dubai. It is important to identify key national, regional and global events to tap in for the Call to Action for WASH in Schools advocacy. Therefore we are asking partners to explore events planned for 2010 and advocate for creating a space for WASH in Schools. Partners who would like to join at the Call to Action for WASH in schools are welcome to visit www.washinschools.com or www.unicef.org/wash/school website for further information.
Release: "Sustainable Sanitation Practice - Use of Urine" by EcoSan Club
The free journal "Sustainable Sanitation Practice" (SSP) is published quarterly by the non profit organisation EcoSan Club.
With the journal EcoSan Club tries to make available high quality information on practical experiences with available sustainable sanitation systems. SSP should fill a gap that they have identified in the last few years in which sustainable sanitation has become an important issue that is discussed among many disciplines. For SSP a sanitation system is sustainable when it is not only economically viable, socially acceptable and technically and institutionally appropriate, but it should also protect the environment and the natural resources.

Duncan Mara is a professor of civil engineering at the University of Leeds in England currently. He has been working on low-cost sanitation in developing countries since the mid-1970s, and also on low-cost wastewater treatment and reuse.
