Finance and economics play a key role in the selection and sustainability of sanitation systems. Despite their significance, many sanitation systems are planned without a thorough understanding of these issues due to their complexity and lack of knowledge of the planners. One central problem is the lack of consistent data that captures the wide range of financial and economic aspects of sanitation projects. Another difficulty is the limited data on the overall costs and benefits of sanitation interventions, particularly the less tangible impacts on health and environment.
This working group strives to tackle these challenges. This will be done by developing an agreed methodology for the financial and economic evaluation of sanitation projects, a fact sheet on cost and economics of sustainable sanitation and expanding the knowledge base by conducting a sanitation survey, serving as a platform for exchange of information. The ultimate goal is to enable a fair cost comparison between different types of sanitation systems in order to determine the most sustainable solution with regard to financial/economic aspects.
