Content - Summary

In Syrien werden über zwei Drittel des Süßwasservorkommens in der
Landwirtschaft zur Bewässerung der Felder genutzt. Zugleich wird ungereinigtes
Abwasser traditionell zur Bewässerung in der Landwirtschaft
eingesetzt. Damit kommen Nahrungsmittel - auch solche, die ungekocht
gegessen werden - mit pathogenen Keimen in Kontakt. Die dadurch
bedingte hohe Rate an Infektionskrankheiten wie Typhus, Hepatitis
und Wurmkrankheiten ist nicht nur mit großem persönlichen Leid
verbunden, sie verursacht auch hohen volkswirtschaftlichen Schaden.
Bei den Überlegungen zur Verbesserung der Abwasserbehandlung
muss auch die Siedlungsstruktur Syriens beachtet werden. Den wenigen
großen Städten wie ALEPPO, HAMA, HOMS und DAMASKUS
stehen zahlreiche kleine Dörfer und verstreute Siedlungen im ländlichen
Bereich gegenüber. Während diese vier Städte durch zentrale technische
Abwasserkläranlagen bedient werden können, stellt die Abwasserentsorgung
für den Rest des Landes und insbesondere für den ländlichen
Raum ein großes Problem dar. Hier kann nur eine dezentrale
Abwasserreinigung Abhilfe schaffen.
