Las aguas subterráneas desempeñan un papel fundamental en la salud económica y social de muchas zonas urbanas del mundo en desarrollo. No hay estadísticas completas sobre la proporción del suministro de agua en las zonas urbanas que se obtiene de aguas subterráneas, pero más de 1.000 millones de habitantes de ciudades en Asia y 150 millones en América Latina dependen tal vez, directa o indirectamente, de manantiales, pozos y norias. Debido a su costo relativamente bajo y a su calidad por lo general alta, el agua subterránea ha sido a menudo la fuente preferida para las redes públicas de abastecimiento de agua potable y se explota ampliamente para usos privados domésticos e industriales.
