Sanitation for Millions (S4M) is a global programme with the main objective to improve access to safely managed sanitation and the hygiene situation especially in countries afflicted by high numbers of refugees and internally displaced people. S4M is financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (funds earmarked for Uganda and Jordan). The global programme strategically aims at preventing conflicts, improving the local environmental conditions, mitigating health risks, and generating employment in the sector. Learning experience and success stories from different continents are transferred and adapted to other regional contexts. The programme’s results directly contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (especially SDG 6 and SDG 4). The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is in charge of programme implementation. GIZ cooperates closely with local partners in the respective implementation countries.
