Afin de réaliser les Objectifs de Développement du Millénaire et d’implémenter le plan de Johannesbourg, de nouveaux concepts holistiques d’assainissement sont nécessaires, basés sur des systèmes écologiques en circuit fermé, économiquement réalisables au lieu de faire usage de la technologie coûteuse « fin de canalisation » (end of pipe). L’assainissement écologique apporte une philosophie nouvelle dans la gestion des déchets et des eaux usées, présentement considérés comme déchets. Cette approche est fondée sur la réutilisation et du recyclage des nutriments et de l’eau et constitue une alternative holistique, hygiéniquement saine en circuit fermé, aux systèmes conventionnels. Les systèmes ecosan permettent la récupération des nutriments des excrétas humains et de l’urine au profit de l’agriculture, ils contribuent ainsi à la préservation des sols, et assurent la sécurité alimentaire pour les générations fututres, ils minimisent la pollution de l’eau et permettent la récupération de la bioénergie. Ils assurent que l’eau est économiquement utilisée et qu’elle est recyclée de façon saine, jusqu’au plus haut degré pour des buts comme l’irrigation et le rechargement des nappes phréatiques.
