El continuo crecimiento demográfico y la urbanización han dado lugar a un aumento constante de las presiones antropogénicas sobre los recursos hídricos, lo que hace que la disponibilidad de agua sea una preocupación importante a nivel internacional. El objetivo 6 de los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible de las Naciones Unidas es garantizar la disponibilidad y la gestión sostenible de los servicios de agua y saneamiento para todos.

Las ciudades intermedias de Bolivia han tenido un notorio crecimiento demográfico, lo que ha aumentado la demanda de agua y, por consiguiente, ha generado grandes volúmenes de aguas residuales. En este contexto, la Fundación Aguatuya propone mejorar la gestión del agua y promover la recuperación de nutrientes mediante un enfoque de economía circular. Esta estrategia conlleva la puesta en marcha de plantas municipales de tratamiento de aguas residuales, asegurando al mismo tiempo la reutilización del efluente tratado en el riego de cultivos. El agua recuperada puede ofrecer oportunidades para un suministro de agua de reigo complementario, sostenible y fiable para la agricultura.
El tratamiento de las aguas residuales según normas aceptables de calidad (tratamiento apto para el reuso) y la aplicación del riego a cierto tipo de cultivos aumenta el potencial de reúso del agua tartada y asegura un reúso responsable y seguro, contribuyendo a la economía local, la salud de las personas y el medio ambiente.
