Deployment of innovative toilet technologies for the underprivileged societies

Project year: 2023 • Technology Innovation Foundation of IIT Palakkad (TECHIN)

Purpose

Community intervention activities of Technology Innovation foundation of IIT Palakkad at Kotagiri tribal area, Tamil Nadu, India

Activities

Technology Innovation Foundation of IIT Palakkad (TECHIN) is the incubation arm of IIT Palakkad. TECHIN, in collaboration with the Global Sanitation Center of Excellence (GSCOE) of IIT Palakkad, is eagerly interested in expanding the field-testing and validation of promising start-up innovations to facilitate the sanitation needs of the rural villagers. Nirgandh is a startup incubated at TECHIN of IIT Palakkad. It provides technology-driven affordable sanitation products and services to help stop open defecation, conserve water resources reduce/stop water resource contamination, and help stop manual scavenging. This startup incubated at TECHIN of IIT Palakkad is getting funding support for incubation and technology validation through HDFC Bank Parivartan CSR initiative and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).
Considering the needs of this underprivileged society identified by our NGO partner Keystone Foundation at Kotagiri, we recommend field installation of the toilet technology developed by our incubated start-up Nirgandh at eight locations at Kotagiri (four in HMC Nagar and four in Sedikal and Garikayur villages). TECHIN has facilitated the successful installation and testing of eight biodigester "Nirgandh" toilets at eight locations at Kotagiri during March 2023. The toilets installed directly benefit 75 underprivileged society members of Kotagiri and have considerably contributed to the reduction of water and soil contaminations in the fragile ecological system of Kotagiri (included in the Nilgiris biosphere reserve of India).
