Developing Guidelines for Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems

2016 - 2022 • Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) & United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

Purpose

The development of National Guidelines was one key instrument to facilitate a focused dialogue, for knowledge management, to create awareness, acceptance and capacities. These Guidelines are a reference for more detailed legislation, standards and manuals

Activities

In this project the performance of Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) was evaluated, policies and guiding documents were reviewed and National Guidelines were developed in collaboration with key sector actors. The Guidelines were endorsed by the Ministry of Water (Tanzania). In order to operationalize the Guidelines trainings based on the Guidelines were developed and facilitated and the Guidelines were presented on national conferences. In 2021 the Guidelines were translated to Kiswahili. In the third Phase of the project in 2022 the Guidelines were presented on the National Scientific Water Conference (Maji – Scientific Conference) and a one-day conference on Wastewater and Faecal Sludge Management was facilitated to assess the progress since the development of the Guidelines and to develop key next steps for scaling decentralised sanitation solutions.
