SuSanA News - September 2022
Dear SuSanA members and friends,

It was an amazing and fruitful month for SuSanA as well as for many sanitation and WASH enthusiasts. The compact one-day 32nd SuSanA virtual meeting brought together over 100 SuSanA members online, sharing new knowledge and progress towards our common goal of achieving the SDGs. SuSanA then participated in the World Water Week 2022 in Stockholm, as a session co-convener and an exhibitor on site. During this week, we did not only strive to tackle the “unseen value of water” from the sanitation perspective, but also provided a stage for SuSanA partners to present their innovations to a broader audience.

Moreover, the change process towards SuSanA 2.0 is underway and we would like to draw your attention to the upcoming election of the SuSanA Global Steering Committee. The election will take place online from 17 to 20 October. Regional representatives from all over the world will be elected to form the new decision-making body of SuSanA. We invite you to check the candidates in your respective voting regions and mark the election in your calendar - every vote counts!

Many regional conferences such as LatinoSan2022, FSMA7 & AfWA congress are coming soon, and you can still register or contribute. More details can be found below.

Yours sincerely,
Arne, Alexandra, Maren, Teresa, Daphne and Yuxiao

SuSanA at World Water Week
Impressions and key takeaways
SuSanA participated in the World Water Week 2022 by organizing 3 side events, co-convening 4 sessions and a launch event, and presenting an exhibition on site. Thank you to all who joined our events online and in person!

SuSanA offered to its community the possibility to meet informally on the Sunday before the start of the on-site conference. SuSanA members were given the chance to discuss the future of SuSanA and the priorities of the sector in an informal and relaxed setting. Some members even tried their hands at WASH board games.

The SuSanA booth was an opportunity to showcase our network to a broad audience, to engage with key stakeholders in the WASH and development sectors, and to present ongoing projects and new innovations from partners and members of SuSanA.

Two women networking events were successfully held with more than 150 participants in total. Unable to attend this time? No worries! Stay tuned for follow-up events and activities online and in person!

Meanwhile, we are sharing our takeaways from other WASH related sessions on the SuSanA forum. Follow the thread below to learn more and stay up to date for session recordings.
Sanitation Workers Knowledge and Learning Hub
Official launch
New SuSanA sister: The Sanitation Workers Knowledge and Learning Hub (SWKLH) has been officially launched at the World Bank booth during the World Water Week 2022 in Stockholm. Water Aid, SNV and World Bank demonstrated the platform and its features, while SuSanA was given the chance to highlight the good collaboration and the merits of connecting platforms and networks for the cohesion of the sanitation sector.

Ensuring the rights of sanitation workers is a crucial discussion point in achieving SDG6: Clean water and sanitation for all. SWKLH serves as the platform for the dissemination and exchange of resources and information regarding sanitation workers. It comprises a library of publications, research, reports and other resources, forum posts, events, a photo library as well as blog posts and opinion columns on sanitation workers' rights. It is hosted by SuSanA, supported by WaterAid, ILO, WHO, SNV and the World Bank, and financed by the BMGF. Make sure to visit the new platform and share your feedback on the dedicated Forum thread or directly to

Join the (online) premiere on Monday, 26 September
The short film “Tackling Taboos” is part of the Albanian social media campaign ATO KANË EMËR - #LetsTalkPERIOD. Menstrual Health is still a taboo to talk about also in Albanian families, on the other hand, the lack of sanitary facilities sometimes prevents girls from equally participating in school education. In her 11-minute film journalist, TV-host and Goodwill Ambassador Fatma Hahialiu wants to find out how far Albania has come in the fight against menstrual taboos and restrictions.

#LetsTalkPERIOD – which has already reached more than half of the Albanian population – was produced with support from GIZ on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
