1. Past and upcoming events
 

Two ecosan workshops in Kenya took place at the end of September: The Ecosan Capacity Development Workshop in Ugunja and the Ecosan Vision Workshop in Nairobi were conducted by seecon (Switzerland) and ESF (India) financed by GTZ. The aim was to bring together Kenyan sanitation and ecosan experts from various sectors and to create a forum for open discussion on the future developments of ecosan in Kenya. A meeting of nodes and networks for sustainable sanitation in Latin America took place in Peru in mid October 2010: The Latin American Sustainable Sanitation Network was formed with three strategic working lines being knowledge management, advocacy and organisational development. The World Toilet Summit (WTS) in Philadelphia, USA took place from the 31 Oct. to 3 Nov. Jack Sim, founder of the World Toilet Organization (WTO) said: Having WTS in the US provided an extraordinary opportunity to share the sanitation knowledge and passion with a broader group of liked-minded professionals. - The WTS tracks focused on issues such as Innovations in Global Toilet Design and Applications; Bottom of the Pyramid Market and Micro Financing; Advocacy and Potty Parity; and Cleaning and Personal Care.

The Third African Water Week will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 22-26 November 2010. The conference will focus on the Water and Sanitation Challenges and Opportunities in Africa to implement the Africa Water Vision and the Millennium Development Goals on water and sanitation. 2. Improved library, working groups section and FAQs on SuSanA website

We have improved the usability and performance of the SuSanA library (http://tinyurl.com/23t9s68) by providing a free-text search. It allows searches in the currently 600 documents in various languages: English (467), Spanish (49), French (35), German (13), Arabic (5), Chinese (1) and other languages (24). If you would like to add your publication to the SuSanA Library, please contact us.

Moreover the pages of the working groups now show the photo of the current working group lead and co-lead and related videos (http://tinyurl.com/2akrkw6). This should indicate that SuSanA is not only a network of organisations, but also a network of dedicated people dealing with sustainable sanitation.

3. SuSanA logo on websites of SuSanA partners
 

Including the SuSanA logo on the websites of our partners is a simple way to reach more people and to spread, develop and discuss the ideas of sustainable sanitation. So far, around 20 out of 135 partners have added the SuSanA logo with back link to the SuSanA website on their own websites. We want to thank those partners and wish to encourage the others to find a suitable place for the SuSanA logo on their websites. 4. Sanitation as a business: Issue 5 of Sustainable Sanitation Practice
 

SuSanA partner EcoSan Club Austria has published the fifth issue of the Sustainable Sanitation Practice (SSP) journal and it is available for free at http://www.ecosan.at/ssp/ (and also in the SuSanA library). The topic of this issue is: Sanitation as a business.

5. New partners
 

We welcome partner number 135 of SuSanA who has joined in October. It is the Spanish consulting firm SES Efficiency (http://www.sesefficiency.eu/). SES develops concepts and solutions designed for cities in different areas of sustainability (energy efficiency, transport, water and waste, education). More information: http://tinyurl.com/395jkk9.

6. Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management Toolbox launched
 

On 1 November, the Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management toolbox went online. This toolbox has been prepared by seecon with the support of many SuSanA partners as an integrated capacity development support, which links up sustainable sanitation, agriculture and water management. It contains a guided exercise to prioritise and understand the local problems, a large compilation of factsheets on hardware and software tools and approaches. There are also further readings, links, a library, glossary, ready-made powerpoints and soon also a train-the-trainers section. The whole toolbox is open-source and available for free. 7. New urine recycling project in South Africa with funding from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
 

A large nutrient recovery project for sustainable sanitation in South Africa has received a 3 million US dollars grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This joint project by our SuSanA partners Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology), the eThekwini Water and Sanitation utility (EWS) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa will continue developing practical, community-scale nutrient recovery systems.
