This monthly e-mail informs you about the latest news from SuSanA and the SuSanA partners. 1. Input is welcome: The compilation of 13 SuSanA factsheets is progressing well

You might have seen the postings on the SuSanA discussion forum about the revisions of the factsheets of some working groups. The driver for this is the planned SuSanA compilation of all 13 factsheets in one book, initiated by the SuSanA secretariat (see posting by Elisabeth von Muench here: http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/69-relevant-for-all-working-groups/473-compilation-of-factsheets-is-getting-closer-to-completion-input-still-welcome. We are trying to complete the revised draft compilation by 20 November so that we can circulate it to all SuSanA members (a preliminary version was published in August, see here: http://www.susana.org/lang-en/library?view=ccbktypeitem&type=2&id=1229). Please take part in the discussions of the factsheets and share your knowledge on: http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/6-susana-working-groups

2. Working group 6 (cities and planning) held side event at the WSSCC Global Forum in Mumbai

The SuSanA cities and planning working group organised a working group meeting at the WSSCC Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene on 12 October 2011 in Mumbai, India. The meeting with several external guests discussed how the working group could support the Community of Practice (CoP) to be launched by WSSCC during the Global Forum and which tasks it could undertake in future.

3. Share your thoughts: Planning has begun for the next SuSanA meeting in 2012

At the last SuSanA meeting in Stockholm (the 14th meeting), the following three locations were suggested for the next SuSanA meeting: LatinoSan in Panama (early 2012), East Asia San in Indonesia (April 2012) or AfricaSan 4 (note that for AfricaSan4 no date has been set for 2012 yet).

4. New: Subscribe to e-mail alert for new postings on the SuSanA discussion forum

Good news: You can now subscribe to an e-mail alert service for new posts on the SuSanA discussion forum. All you have to do is to leave your e-mail address (http://forum.susana.org/forum/subscribe) and you will then receive a notification by e-mail showing all the new posts in the last 24 hours. By subscribing to the e-mail alert service you will never miss the start of a new discussion or replies to a topic already under discussion. Even people who have not yet created a login for themselves, can subscribe to this service, simply by leaving their e-mail address and thus begin to follow the forum passively.

5. SuSanA is growing: We announce 10 new partners

The SuSanA network has recently grown in size with 10 new partner organisations joining the network bringing the total to 173. A brief introduction to each new partner organisation is given below.

164. South African Toilet Organisation (SATO) - their mission is to ensure the health and dignity of all South Africans and to protect our natural resources through the provision of environmentally friendly toilets and sustainable sanitation practices. www.satoilet.co.za/

165. Areal GmbH (Germany) - a company which focuses on the development, planning and implementation of nature based wastewater treatment plants, following the principles of circular flow economy. http://www.areal-gmbh.de/

166. PATH (USA) - is an international non-profit organisation that creates sustainable, culturally relevant solutions, enabling communities worldwide to break longstanding cycles of poor health. www.path.org

167. EcoSur (Latin America) - addresses the great housing deficit in Southern countries, especially the vast majority of people who have no adequate roof over their heads. Whether through social housing projects with locally produced construction materials (ecomaterials) and designs to resist natural disasters, or ongoing research that connects science with practice, EcoSur confronts the housing issue including aspects of sanitation. www.english.ecosur.org/index.php

168. Rwanda Environmental Conservation Organization (RECOR) - is a national non-profit environmental conservation NGO, which puts much emphasis on environmental education, promotion of the utilisation of renewable energy, soil conservation, reforestation and agroforestry promotion and execution. www.rwandaenvironment.org

169. Tanzania Association of Environmental Engineers (TAEEs) - is offering community facilitation services in water supply and sanitation, solid waste management, public health & hygiene and education. Furthermore they design, implement and supervise water supply and sanitation projects and are conducting environmental and institutional development studies. www.taees.com/

170. Excloosive Ltd. (Kenya) - their mission is to provide innovative, hygienic and environmentally responsible sanitation products and services, through employment of sustainable technology leading to increased consumer dignity and a healthier community. www.excloosive.co.ke

171. Skat - is an independent Swiss organisation working in the fields of development and humanitarian aid. Since 1978, Skat has provided technical expertise, management support, and training to bilateral and multilateral development agencies, and to non-governmental organisations. www.skat.ch/

172. Busoga Trust - is a UK based water, sanitation and hygiene organisation which has operated in Uganda (and to a limited extent in Tanzania and Kenya) since 1982. They act as a service provider, implementing hardware and software contracts on behalf of donors such as DfID, Wateraid, Plan international, UN Habitat and local government. www.busogatrust.co.uk/

173. Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) - is the only university of veterinary, agricultural and forestry sciences in Sweden and they are especially active within the SuSanA network regarding agricultural reuse and sanitation for emergencies and low income areas. http://www.slu.se/en/

6. The SSWM Toolbox celebrates its first birthday and invites you to participate in a user survey

The Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management Toolbox is an open-source capacity development tool for the local level, linking water management, sanitation and agriculture. On the 1st of November, the Toolbox celebrated its first birthday. The SSWM Toolbox is put into practice by various SuSanA partners and other organisations under the lead of the Swiss company seecon gmbh. Recently, the Toolbox won the IWA Project Innovation Award! The Toolbox aims at capacitating people not only with knowledge, but also with application skills. It provides both help in project planning and implementation, focuses on technologies (hardware) and behavioural change approaches (software), and compiles the relevant further readings, links, exercises etc. for each topic. The Toolbox contains also a large library, a glossary, a Train-the-Trainer's section. It is open source, for free and quality approved.

7. Sharing knowledge: A selection of new additions to the SuSanA library

Since the last news mail, we have added another 60 documents to the SuSanA library bringing the total number to 984 (see www.susana.org/library where the most recently uploaded documents are shown at the top of the list). Of these 60, we highlight the following six publications to you:

EAWAG, WSSCC, UN-HABITAT: Community-Led Urban Environmental Sanitation Planning: CLUES
Luethi, C., Morel, A., Tilley, E., Ulrich, L. (2011)
The Community-Led Urban Environmental Sanitation (CLUES) approach presents comprehensive guidelines for the planning and implementation of environmental sanitation infrastructure and services in disenfranchised urban and peri-urban communities. CLUES is a multi-sector and multi-actor approach accounting for water supply, sanitation, solid waste management and storm drainage. It emphasises the participation of all stakeholders from an early stage in the planning process.

WSTF: Toolkit for urban public sanitation projects in Kenya
Water Services Trust Fund, Kenya (2011)
This toolkit contains the complete set of tools (e.g. drawings, BoQs, management guidelines) that the Water Service Providers (WSPs) need to plan, design, implement, manage, monitor and evaluate urban public sanitation projects for their customers specifically in low income areas.The toolkit is owned and was developed by the Water Services Trust Fund (WSTF), a pro-poor basket fund, which is being supported by GIZ Kenya.

EAWAG: Where do Kampala's poor go?
Guenther, I., Horst, A., Luethi, C., Mosler, H.-J., Niwagaba, B. C., Tumwebaze K., I (2011)
This publication presents the results of a representative survey conducted with 1500 poor households in Uganda’s capital during November 2010 showing that the majority of Kampala’s urban poor have access to on-site sanitation facilities. Despite the widespread accessibility to sanitation, the conditions of many facilities are unsatisfactory due to the large number of users per stance which results in low hygienic standards and long queues.

EcoSan Club, Austria: Biogas Systems. Sustainable Sanitation Practice (SSP), Issue 9
This issue shows successful biogas sanitation projects:

Results from a study in Kerala, India, for digesters on a household level.
First results of a digester constructed in a small village in Morocco.
The second paper shows tesults of a long-term implementation program for biogas systems in Lesotho.

WSP: Introductory Guide to Sanitation Marketing - WSP Scaling Up Rural Sanitation

Sanitation marketing is an emerging field with a relatively small group of practitioners who are learning by doing. With an Introductory Guide to Sanitation Marketing, the Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) seeks to contribute to the field by sharing practical guidance on the design, implementation, and monitoring of rural sanitation marketing programs at scale in India, Indonesia, and Tanzania, plus additional projects implemented in Cambodia and Peru.

moSan - mobile sanitation: Toilet for the urban poor in Bangladesh
Mijthab, M. (2011)
GIZ Bangladesh and the German industrial designer student Mona Mijthab developed a non-infractructure-based separation dry toilet for the urban poor in Bangladesh. The household toilet is part of a sustainable sanitation system that shall be run on a leasing scheme with collectors, transport, excreta treatment and possibly reuse. The lightweight toilet can be carried and used at a convenient place and is also suitable in cases of emergency, like flooded areas.

8. Monthly SuSanA discussion forum digest: What has been discussed?

We are busy spreading the word about the SuSanA discussion forum and explaining its concept and features.
