1.  BMGF to transfer the existing private 'Sanitation Network' to SuSanA

The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance has been chosen by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to manage the results from over 80 projects of their Sanitation Science and Technology Programme on the SuSanA online knowledge management platform. The Swedish Environmental Institute and SuSanA have been tasked by the Foundation to share the results from these projects in an open public forum engaging a broad range of experts and the general public. Over the next 15 months SEI will work with the Programme Grantees of the Foundation in order to broaden understanding and discussion about their work. The grantees will be encouraged to work through the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) that has about 191 institutional members and 1790 discussants on its discussion forum.

2.  Presentations from the FSM2 are now available online

The Second International Faecal Sludge Management Conference was held in Durban, South Africa from 29 to 31 October 2012. Numerous stimulating and exciting conversations were initiated during FSM2 amongst the more than 300 participants.

The presentations and papers of the conference are now available online. Photos from the technical tours to various sanitation projects and programs by eThekwini Water and Sanitation Services (EWS) in the eThekwini municipality also uploaded to flickr www.flickr.com/photos/gtzecosan/sets/72157631921109093. The videos and photos from the conference shall also be uploaded on SuSanA website soon.

Following the conference, the discussions continue on the SuSanA discussion forum.  Steven Sugden initiated the topic on “Pit emptying” and you can get involved in the discussion here http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/53-faecal-sludge-management/2584-pit-emptying#2587

Elisabeth von Muench presented "Accelerating learning in sustainable sanitation", in which she explained the resources of SuSanA for learning and more about the SuSanA Discussion Forum: why it was established, the spirit in which it is run, what other forums there are, the moderators behind it, what the moderators do, what the plans are for the future. The presentation is available at http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/97-innovative-science-and-technology-for-sanitation-in-low-resource-settings/2432-open-forum-for-grantees-of-bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation#2646.

3. SuSanA networking side event at the FSM 2

On the evening of the opening day of the FSM2 conference a SuSanA networking side event took place. The event was well attended with over 50 people in attendance. The discussions that took place in an open forum style centered around feedback to the secretariat on people's experience using the platform, suggestions for further improvement and the upcoming SuSanA strategy process was discussed. A few ideas were shared about where the SuSanA network should be heading in the next 5 years and the current discussion taking place on the SuSanA forum about the SuSanA mission statement. Detailed notes on this discussion are now available on the SuSanA website. http://susana.org/lang-en/meetings/side-events/173-side-events/784-oct-2012-susana-side-event-at-fsm2

4. Impressions from II ECOSANLAC in Brazil

The second Latin American conference on sustainable sanitation, II ECOSANLAC, was held in Vitoria, Brazil 4 – 7 November 2012. Participants came from Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Angola, Sweden and South Africa.

Some impressions from the conference, and more generally on South-South interactions, from Maximilian Grau and Ruth Cottingham, both researchers working at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa are posted on the SuSanA discussion Forum http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/21-events/1966-ecosanlac-conference-in-brazil-nov-2012-vitoria-now-with-feedback. The  potential benefits of strengthening South-South exchange were explored. Collaboration between southern countries could  assist with the development of realistic and useful legislation in relation to sustainable sanitation solutions. The general lack of a common language is currently a key barrier to effective South-South exchange.

5.  Monthly SuSanA discussion forum digest: What has been discussed?

If you would like to receive the Forum Digest by e-mail which is sent out twice a week, you simply need to register as a SuSanA member here: www.susana.org/lang-en/register and then you will be automatically subscribed to the Forum Digest.

Do you need feedback on your publication from other sanitation experts or would you like to share your thoughts on a certain publication? Our new publication discussion section on the SuSanA discussion forum is just the right place for you! http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/89-publication-discussions

Some of the topics that have been discussed in the last month are:

6.  SuSanA mission Statement: Whats are your views?

There has been a lively discussion about the current collated version of the SuSanA mission statement: “SuSanA is an informal network dedicated to researching and promoting viable and sustainable sanitation solutions, while helping the development of best practice and integrated policy templates. It links on the ground experiences with an engaged community made up of practitioners, policy makers and academia.”

Please add your views and opinions to the SuSanA mission statement discussion here: http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories?func=view&catid=10&id=2271&limit=1000#2500

The next collation of the SuSanA mission statement is planned for early December 2012 as we move towards a mission statement that the majority of the SuSanA network shares.

7. Four new SuSanA case studies

The following four new case studies have been uploaded to the SuSanA website.

BolíviaEl Alto UDDT large-scale peri-urban system. The project constructed 897 UDDT units and benefited around 4,485 persons. It was implemented in district 7, a peri-urban area with an estimated population of roughly 27,000, composed mainly of Aymara indigenous people.   Pictures on Flickr on this project: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gtzecosan/sets/72157631865820335/.

Nepal: Promotion of ecological sanitation, Sabaithuwa, Parsa District, Nepal (draft). The case study describes a 2 phased pilot project initiative in the village of Sabaithuwa in the Parsa District in Nepal. The pilot project promoted ecological sanitation with the main objective to improve the local sanitation situation in Sabaithuwa village.

Ethiopia: Urine-diverting dry toilets at Adama University . This case study is about a pilot scale construction of UDDTs at Adama University (AU), Ethiopia. The University Capacity Building Programme (UCBP), Ethiopia with the support of GIZ International Services (formerly, GTZ International Services) in Ethiopia and OtterWasser GmbH, designed, funded and constructed a UDDT complex for some(but not all) staff and students at AU in Ethiopia.

Uganda: Large-scale peri-urban and rural sanitation with UDDTs, South Western region, Uganda (draft): The South Western Towns Water and Sanitation (SWTWS) project was created in 1995 to provide water supply and improve sanitation in 19 small towns and rural centres in South West Uganda.A total of 927 UDDT were constructed.  Pictures on Flickr of large scale peri-urban and rural sanitation with UDDTs in the South Western region of Uganda http://www.flickr.com/photos/gtzecosan/sets/72157631001526388/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/gtzecosan/sets/72157631399172126/
