1.  SuSanA's sixth Anniversary

The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) has come a long way since its formation at the kick-off meeting in January 2007 in Eschborn, Germany. This January, SuSanA celebrates its 6th Anniversary. The SuSanA network has grown over the past six years to a platform with 191 international partner organisations and 2134 members organised in 11 working groups. Many excellent publications from working groups, partners and individual members have emerged from these joint efforts showing viable avenues for the future.

The SuSanA website (www.susana.org) is a vibrant tool for knowledge exchange, capacity development and communication. The relevance of the SuSanA discussion forum has motivated the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to move their ‘Sanitation Network’, a forum for exchange amongst all the Grantees of the ‘Re-invent the Toilet Challenge’, to the SuSanA platform.

SuSanA has instigated the dialogue on sanitation issues around the world. Looking back we can all be proud of what we have achieved together.

The SuSanA secretariat wants to take this opportunity to thank you personally for your interest, cooperation, dedication and support to work as a network on a common vision of sustainable sanitation. End of December last year, we sent all our partners a package which included SuSanA publications and the offline version of the website on a usb stick. We have another 100 SuSanA USB sticks available to give away to members especially from countries with poor internet connection. You can request a USB  here http://susana.org/lang-en/working-groups/wg01/dvd-order. If you had problems opening the USB please see this instruction flyer.

2.  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grants now open for discussion on SuSanA forum. Join in!

In our newsmail in November we informed you that a team of SuSanA members has been chosen by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to share the results from over 80 research projects of their Sanitation Science and Technology Programme on the SuSanA platform and in an open public discussion forum engaging a broad range of experts and the general public. Under the direction of Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the SuSanA secretariat, a team consisting of several SuSanA members is working over the next 12 months to launch discussions on the 80 grants in the field of sanitation and hygiene which were funded by the Foundation under the Grand Challenge Exploration and 'Reinvent The Toilet Challenge' since 2011. Recently 164 postings were moved from the old closed discussion group of the foundation into the open space on the forum here: http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/96-innovative-sanitation-science-and-technology-exchange. Feel free to join-in in the conversation and have your say!

Also twenty reports, mostly in the field of faecal sludge management, which were funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are now available in the SuSanA library here: http://susana.org/lang-en/library?showby=yeardesc&vbls=7&vbl_7=79&vbl_0=0

3. The world we want! The post-2015 WASH sub-consultation

In the years up to 2015, the world needs to remain focused on achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). At the same time, discussions have already begun on the agenda that could build on and succeed the MDGs. The World We Want will gather the priorities of people from every corner of the world and help build a collective vision that will be used directly by the United Nations and World Leaders to plan a new development agenda launching in 2015, one that is based on the aspirations of all citizens!

Over the course of 5 weeks (14 January to 17 February), the Stream on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) will lay out weekly related topics with key questions that you, as the viewer, can comment, discuss and debate about in this open platform.  This stream will provide a contribution to the Thematic Consultation on Water with recommendations on how to address WASH related challenges in the post-2015 development agenda which will be then fed into the intergovernmental process to develop Post 2015 Sustainable Development Goal. The Sub-Consultation will take place through discussions on five specific themes:

Week 1: Aspirational Objectives of the Joint Monitoring Program (14-21 Jan.)
Week 2: WASH in Schools (21-28 Jan.)
Week 3: WASH, and Governance: People, Power and Politics (28 Jan. – 4 Feb.)
Week 4: Consultation on WASH and Environmental Sustainability (4-11 Feb.)
Week 5: WASH and Economic Development (11-17 Feb.)

4.  Make postings by email on the discussion forum

Did you wish you could respond to the posts on the SuSanA discussion forum without going to the forum webpage and without  logging in? To offer you more choices, we have now introduced the "contribute by e-mail functionality": You can now send your post by an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  and it will end up  on the forum here under a suitable category (after a manual spam control): http://forum.susana.org/forum/recent. The process is simple: when a post is sent by e-mail, it first lands in the incoming posts inbox which is only visible to the moderators. The moderators check this inbox daily and move it to the right category - and then it becomes visible to all. In case the post is a reply to an existing thread, it will be moved under it. By having several moderators, a response time of 24hrs is aimed for. Thus, you can now make a posting on the forum  even while you are offline (e.g. on a train) and then send it immediately when you are online. However you need to ensure the email address from which you send the email is the same as the email address registered on SuSanA. In case you are only subscribed to the SuSanA newsmail, you also need to register as a member (for free) once in your lifetime with SuSanA prior to sending the e-mail. You can register yourself as a member here www.susana.org/register.

5.  Monthly SuSanA discussion forum digest: What has been discussed?

If you would like to receive the Forum Digest by e-mail which is sent out twice a week, you simply need to register as a SuSanA member here: www.susana.org/lang-en/register and then you will be automatically subscribed to the Forum Digest.

A call for contributions to the French section on the forum has been made: http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/44-forum-de-discussion-en-francais-forum-for-french-speaking-people

Do you need feedback on your publication from other sanitation experts or would you like to share your thoughts on a certain publication? Our new publication discussion section on the SuSanA discussion forum is just the right place for you! http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/89-publication-discussions

Some of the topics that have been discussed in the last month are:

New announcements under Jobs and internships on offer, Events, Publication discussions, Call for proposals (projects and awards).

6.  New features on the SuSanA discussion forum

As a non native speaker did you wish you could read the discussions on the SuSanA forum in a language of your choice? Now you can! With the new google translate feature embedded into the discussion forum, you can read the posts in any language you want by clicking on the 'select language' button on the top right side of the forum page.

Another new feature on the forum is that you can control the forum digests (email compilation of the latest discussions) you receive. You now have the option to choose the frequency of forum digests  from - daily, twice a week, weekly, twice a month, monthly or none / never. You can manage your settings by loging-in on to the SuSanA website (www.susana.org) and clicking on "Change your details".

Vous pouvez désormais envoyer votre message par mail à cette adresse : This email address is being protected from spambots.

http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/89-publication-discussions
