Se conoce que el acceso a los instrumentos de financiamiento y mecanismos de crédito es uno de los factores clave que estimulan el desarrollo de países industrializados así como de las economías emergentes de los países en desarrollo. Sin embargo, ¿están estos instrumentos disponibles en el mundo en desarrollo, principalmente en áreas rurales y peri-urbanas?
Los bancos para desarrollo rural han sido creados en muchos países especialmente con fines agrícolas, pero el acceso a los mismos es todavía limitado para el grupo objetivo mencionado anteriormente. Las condiciones de préstamo pueden constituir una barrera, y los instrumentos de préstamo muchas veces pueden no adaptarse a las realidades locales. Asimismo, para los bancos que se encuentran en áreas dispersas los costos de transacción pueden ser altos, las tasas de retorno bajas y la responsabilidad / credibilidad de los clientes muchas veces es también reducida. Los sistemas de micro-crédito pueden ayudar a mejorar el acceso a los instrumentos de financiamiento para aquellas personas que normalmente no son atendidas por el sistema bancario formal. La diferencia entre micro-crédito y crédito formal no radica solamente en el menor tamaño y volumen de la transacción financiera en cuestión, sino que también se refiere al
contexto socioeconómico dentro del cual ocurre.
