Content - Summary

El reúso de las aguas residuales tratadas (o no tratadas) provenientes de centros urbanos es una práctica común en regiones áridas y semiáridas de Bolivia, que debido a la escasez, el difícil acceso y el incremento de la demanda del recurso, se constituye en una apreciable fuente suplementaria de agua. La escasez de agua para la agricultura, aumenta la necesidad de utilización de aguas de inferior calidad, lo cual puede limitar la productividad agrícola e influir en la degradación de suelos.

Actualmente hay que resaltar que la reutilización del agua es un factor indispensable para la sociedad, especialmente en tiempos de variabilidad y Cambio Climático, ya que al ser un recurso renovable, se lo debería tratar como tal, favoreciendo la implementación de Plantas de Tratamiento de Aguas Residuales (PTAR) tecnológicamente aptas para generar un reúso, de manera que se cuente con mayores beneficios productivos y réditos económicos.

El principal objetivo de la presente publicación es mostrar la situación actual del reuso de aguas residuales (tratadas y no tratadas) en Bolivia, facilitando la identificación de centros urbanos de los que se reutiliza estas aguas en la agricultura, determinando sus principales características y problemáticas. Además se quiere promover la integración de varias visiones sectoriales e intereses en el proceso de definir posibles líneas estratégicas que permitan avizorar soluciones a seguir.

El estudio realizado, identifica 105 centros poblados donde se reutiliza el agua residual en la agricultura o en otras actividades, mostrando su distribución según departamento, tipo de tratamiento, tipo de cultivos regados y población abastecida, describiendo además los principales problemas que presentan.

En el análisis y descripción que se presenta de la problemática del reuso de aguas residuales tratadas en la agricultura, queda implícita la necesidad de sensibilizar a las autoridades sectoriales e intersectoriales involucradas de una u otra manera en la temática, así como a la población en su conjunto, motivando la discusión y la búsqueda de soluciones prácticas que orienten la definición de políticas y estrategias públicas, para la gestión adecuada de estos recursos hídricos en el marco del desarrollo sustentable del país, en tiempos de
Cambio Climático.
