El estudio presenta una evaluación del funcionamiento y seguridad microbiológicas de dos tipos de las letrinas secas (letrinas aboneras seca familiar (LASF) y letrinas solares) en El Salvador.

El estudio estuvo diseñado en dos fases. Una primera fase comprendió el
estudio basal de las características demográficas, conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas de la población en cuanto al uso y mantenimiento de la letrina y observación de las condiciones de la misma. En una segunda fase se procedió a realizar un estudio longitudinal para medir los parámetros físico-químicos que influyen en la destrucción de microorganismos en los biosólidos.

Los resultados del estudio eran como sigue:

Las letrinas LASF generalmente fueron efectivas en producir biosólidos que cumplieron los estándares de la USEPA en cuanto alcontenido de coliformes fecales para biosólidos de clase A (o levemente más alto que las letrinas LASF lo que pudo haber promovido la inactivación de los huevos de Áscaris. Sin embargo, el producto final de las letrinas solares tuvo más probabilidad de tener concentraciones altas de coliformes fecales, Clostridium perfringens y colifagos comparados con las letrinas LASF. Sólo el 55% de las muestras de las letrinas solares cumplió el estándar de coliformes fecales para los biosólidos de Clase A.
Los diseños de las letrinas solares han estado evolucionando en El Salvador. Se
examinaron tres diseños diferentes pertenecientes a tres comunidades diferentes y los resultados por los niveles bacterianos y de colifagos fueron muy diferentes entre los tres diseños.
