Este documento se centra en el tratamiento de aguas residuales doméstica, municipales o aguas grises en humedales artificiales de flujo subsuperficial con arena gruesa como material filtrante. Mayor énfasis se da en la aplicación del sistema en países en desarrollo y en transición con un clima moderadamente cálido, aunque en principio los humedales artificiales pueden ser utilizados en todos los países y tipos de climas.
El presente documento no es un manual de diseño. Por lo que siempre será necesario consultar con un especialista para el diseño de humedales artificiales (HA). Los humedales artificiales son generalmente utilizados como parte de los procesos de tratamiento descentralizado de aguas residuales, industriales o grises. Se implementan principalmente como tratamiento secundario, es decir, los efluentes siempre necesitan de un tratamiento primario, que debe ser de acuerdo a las características del afluente, antes de entrar en el lecho filtrante del HA. Excepto para el "sistema Francés", donde el tratamiento primario (filtro plantado con confitillo) es parte del sistema.
Básicamente, este documento ofrece una visión general y una orientación sobre el diseño y mantenimiento de los humedales artificiales de flujo subsuperficial que pueden ser de flujo horizontal o de flujo vertical. También, incluye la descripción de los tratamientos primarios más comunes, debido a la importancia que tienen para el buen funcionamiento de los HHAA.
