Open job offer: WASH Engineer, Port au Prince, Haiti
Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL) is a US based non-profit organization that has been promoting ecological sanitation in Haiti since 2006. They are currently providing sanitation services to over 15,000 people in Port au Prince and northern Haiti and are treating over 15,000 gallons per week of human waste at composting sites in Cite Soleil and Limonade.  SOIL is a small organization focused on the quality of their work and are committed to developing innovative sanitation solutions in Haiti.


SOIL is pleased to announce a job opening in Port au Prince, Haiti for a WASH engineer. They are seeking a highly qualified engineer with a passion for innovative sanitation interventions and a willingness to commit to a minimum 6 month position in Port au Prince. Though SOIL cannot offer the same salaries and benefits as their larger counterparts, they can promise an inspiring experience and the chance to closely interact with the communities they serve without the security restrictions common to other organizations. 

In the coming year SOIL plans to expand the composting waste treatment facilities in partnership with DINEPA and pilot a household ecological sanitation project in Cite Soleil.  They will also be expanding their agricultural trials and developing new ways to market their compost. 

They are seeking applicants with the following experience and skills:
  • Minimum 5 years experience in WASH-related engineering.
  • Proficiency in English and French or Haitian Kreyol.
  • Willingness to learn Haitian Kreyol.
  • Ability to produce timely narrative and financial reporting on projects.
  • Capacity to work closely with a team in Haiti and respectfully engage with communities.
Job responsibilities will include:
  • Supervising all construction activities in Port au Prince including, but not limited to, public and household toilet design, compost site construction, establishing water sources for facilities and irrigation.
  • Developing design plans for toilets and compost sites.
  • Working closely with Cap Haitien Regional Director to ensure that all lessons learned are shared among the offices.
  • Creating budgets and submitting timely reports on expenses.
  • Contributing to the development of SOIL’s organizational vision by working closely with the rest of the team and participating in staff meetings.
