GTZ in Eschborn (Germany) is searching for an intern who will spend one month in Eschborn and then conduct an internship abroad at World Toilet Organization (WTO) in Singapore for another three months.
Placement and country
Singapur
Field of activity
This is a combined internship; you will first work with the ecosan-Team at GTZ (Eschborn, Germany) for one month and will then conduct an internship abroad at World Toilet Organization (WTO) in Singapore for another three months (extension to five months in Singapore may be possible based on your performance).
Backround
Around 2.6 billion people – more than a third of the global population – are currently living with extremely poor or without improved sanitation. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Development Cooperation (GTZ) started the international ecological sanitation (ecosan) program in May 2001. The aim of this program is to establish ecosan concepts in development cooperation as a well-known approach with a high potential to resolve the increasingly pressing problems related to the global water and sanitation systems and thereby to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of the United Nations.
The GTZ program “Sustainable sanitation – ecosan” is a partner of the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA), a loose network of over 130 public and private organisations all working in the field of sustainable sanitation. GTZ hosts the secretariat and website of this international network.
The World Toilet Organization (WTO), based in Singapore, is an international non-governmental organization, dedicated to improve health and dignity to everyone through better sanitation. WTO works closely with the GTZ ecosan program, is an active member of SuSanA, and leads the SuSanA Working Group on “Sanitation as a business and public awareness”.
Tasks
You will act as a SuSanA liaison for GTZ and WTO and carry out various supporting tasks for GTZ and WTO, such as
• Coordinating the activities of the SuSanA Working Group “Sanitation as a business and public awareness” and promoting knowledge sharing among the Working Group partners
• Assisting the SuSanA secretariat in organising international SuSanA meetings and side events, for example with inviting members, compiling working group summaries and coordinating presentations
• Ensuring external communications through SuSanA’s social media tools (such as facebook)
• Assistance in updating and improving the SuSanA website
• Strategic planning of a sanitation marketing project in the South East Asian and South Asian region (for WTO)
• Research on grants and funding opportunities and assistance in writing grant applications (for WTO)
Requirements
You are in the stage of completing your Master’s degree in social or economic sciences, human development, environmental management, public health, geosciences, environmental engineering or similar. Basic knowledge of international cooperation and sustainable human development is required, and basic knowledge of sustainable sanitation concepts would be an asset. Fluency in English language (verbal/written) is a must and proficiency in MS office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) is required.
Due to visa regulations in Singapore, applicants can only be from the following countries: Germany, France, UK, Australia, New Zealand, US, Hong Kong or Japan (note: The travel costs to Germany would be at your own expense; the travel costs from Germany to Singapore and back would be covered by GTZ).
In Singapore, we expect you to be able to work in a very energetic, creative and international work environment. WTO’s development projects are complex and your tasks require professional and quick responding. You therefore should enjoy working confidently on several projects at the same time.
