In this section a diverse range of technical drawings have been kindly provided by SuSanA members who have been involved in implementation and construction of sustainable sanitation projects. Bac Ninh city lies at a favourable location in the northern economic development triangle of Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh Cities. The GIZ implemented WWM Project, partially subcontracted to GFA consulting group, is providing, for the purpose of the community stimulation and incentive, small-scale grant funds for the implementation of “community pilot” measures. These measures shall be planned and implemented in an open, transparent and participative way. The following is a set of principles for the identification and selection of “community pilot” measures: a) Community pilot measures must benefit community members who are not directly beneficiaries from the kfw project b) Community pilot measures must be replicable with community fund mobilization and the support of local government funding c) Community pilot measures must be identified, planned and implemented in a participatory fashion d) Community pilot measures must relate to the improvement of sanitary conditions of individual households and/or the immediate environment of human settlements e) Community pilot measures must be easily applied at any other areas. f) Community pilot measures result in at least one of the following: · community capacity building, · improvement of community sanitation infrastructure and/or services, · establishment of revolving funds for community works and/or services Based on the given selecting criteria, the pilot measure in Bac Ninh focuses on the improvement of the environment and sanitation conditions for pupils and teachers in Thi Cau secondary school. This pilot measure includes 2 main components: i) financial support for the construction of “child-friendly toilet”; ii) education program which will be carried out by WWM Consultants and Thi Cau secondary school’s teachers in order to increase the awareness and change the behavior of the pupils in Thi Cau secondary school toward the environment and sanitation. This libary entry contains the technical drawings of the toilets with a few selected pictures (as pdf and AutoCad dwg) and the report on pilot measure implementing to improve sanitary, environmental conditions for pupils and teachers in Thi Cau secondary school.

Benchmarking of Urban Sanitation Pricing and Tariffs Structure in Africa

The study was conducted in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique and Senegal to explore how changes in the tariff system could increase access to improved sanitation and how tariffs could be used as a vehicle to deliver affordable and sustainable services. In each of the countries, the study was divided into an inception phase, scoping study, methodology workshop, in-depth fieldwork, and validation workshops. The study found that households pay sanitation tariffs in many forms; payments for using public toilets, connection charges for sewerage; regular payments for the use of sewerage; payments for pit emptying and payments in other forms, including non-financial transactions in some cases. Tariffs are charged by a variety of service providers, including water utilities, local government, small enterprises, NGOs and informal sector service providers. Overall there are some positive practices in sanitation tariffs, but there is no existing single business model, which guarantees the potential of tariffs in providing affordable and sustainable services to the entire city, including low-income populations. It is suggested that a number of changes are required in policy and practice to promote new ways of working to achieve a vision of improved sanitation coverage, especially through tariff regulation and standardization of technologies.

Design of a Portable Ecological Sanitation Toilet for Disaster Relief

A portable toilet appropriate for disaster response is presented in this report. The urine is diverted and the feces undergo a lactofermentation process. Here a few information concerning conection of the pipes from the toilets to the digester: - route the 3 pipes from the toilet cubicles into one "inlet chamber" and from there with one pipe into the digester. With this you minimize possible leakage problems in the area of pipe-wall connection. - if available take 4" pvc pipes (4 or 6kg/cm2) from the toilte cubicles to the inlet chamber. Give a slope of 1%. - If available take a 6" (or 4") pvc pipe from the inlet chamber into the digester. - make the pipe inlet into the digester below the water level in the digester to prevent gas leakage.
