Content - Summary

Mit der Festlegung der Staatengemeinschaft auf neue internationale Entwicklungsziele (SDGs) in diesem Jahr stehen wichtige Weichenstellungen für die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit an. Einfluss auf die Fragen von Wasser und Ernährungssicherheit wird auch der entsprechende Bericht des Sachverständigenrats des Welternährungskomitees der Vereinten Nationen im Oktober 2015 nehmen. Zu den drängendsten Herausforderungen für die Ärmsten und die benachteiligten Bevölkerungsgruppen zählen der sichere Zugang zu ausreichendem, sauberen und adäquaten Wasser als Trinkwasser und die Sicherstellung einer gesunden Ernährung.
Die moderne Bewässerungslandwirtschaft hat in der Vergangenheit einen großen Beitrag zur Verminderung des weltweiten Hungerns geleistet. Doch heute übernutzt und verschmutzt sie in vielen Regionen der Welt die Wasservorkommen und andere natürliche Ressourcen, mit teils katastrophalen Folgen für die Umwelt.
Die besorgniserregenden Prognosen im Weltwasserbericht 2014 gehen davon aus, dass für die Landwirtschaft immer weniger Wasser zur Verfügung stehen wird. Es wird erwartet, dass die Wassernutzung durch die Landwirtschaft bis 2050 stagnieren oder sogar fallen wird. Das schnelle Wachstum anderer Wirtschaftssektoren und deren Ansprüche auf die verfügbaren Wasserressourcen drängen die Landwirtschaft zur Seite. In den wenigen Regionen, wo signifikante Wasservorkommen noch ungenutzt sind, mangelt es an Infrastruktur, Zeit und Geld, um diese zu erschließen.
