En Nicaragua solamente 1.3 millones de habitantes que viven en las ciudades tienen acceso a la red de alcantarillado sanitario, lo que equivale a menos del 40 porciento de los hogares. La mayoría de estas aguas recolectadas es tratada con grandes deficiencias. La demás población urbana tiene letrinas o tanques sépticos. Muchas veces estos sistemas perjudican el medio ambiente por la infiltración en el manto freático o la deposición inadecuada de los lodos recolectados.
Casi tres millones de personas, 89 porciento de los hogares urbanos, tienen acceso a agua potable. Sin embargo, en muchos lugares el líquido vital llega solamente durante unas pocas horas y pocos días a la semana.
Por encargo del Ministerio Federal Alemán de Cooperación Económica y Desarrollo (BMZ), la Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH apoya a la Empresa Nicaragüense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (ENACAL) en mejorar sus servicios de agua potable y saneamiento. Con el Programa de Asistencia Técnica en Agua y Saneamiento (PROATAS) la GIZ asesora a ENACAL en los temas principales de (1) Eficiencia gerencial, (2) Operación y mantenimiento de instalaciones y (3) Autosostenibilidad financiera.
