4. Update on SuSanA partner mapping results in May 2012

The SuSanA secretariat has performed an update on the partner mapping exercise which we did for the first time in 2011. We have updated the analyses done on the SuSanA partner organisations by category, by region, by country, and by year of joining. With this approach we aim to better understand the large variety of partner organisation types in the SuSanA network, as well as to enable networking between the different types of organisations. A filter option exists on the SuSanA website partners’ page (www.susana.org/lang-en/partners) to “Select by Category” (on the right side).  Read  the full results of the analyses here: www.susana.org/lang-en/partners/susana-partner-mapping

Interesting results that came out of the analyses was that of the 36 new partner organisations that joined SuSanA in the past 12 months, 10 organisations are from the Private sector. Four new countries were added to the alliance, namely the Palestinian Territory, Jordan, Lesotho and Ireland. Moreover the alliance now has representation in the MENA region too. We have continued to see growth in our partner base from Sub-saharan Africa with 10 new African partner organisations joining in the past year. Lastly the most SuSanA partner organisations are based in India with 19 partners.

Our new publication discussion section on the SuSanA discussion forum is just the right place for you! http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/89-publication-discussions

Some of the topics that have been discussed in the last month are:

8.  Presentations from the workshop on emergency sanitation in Delft now online

Emergency camp’s sanitation infrastructure is often inadequate and the risks to people’s health become extreme. Governments, NGOs and Humanitarian organisations are fully aware of these problems and the fact that the basic pit latrine design has not been improved upon in decades which aggravated those problems even more.

This is especially applicable for camps packed with tens of thousands of people, be it in refugee situations or after natural disasters. Thus, a consortium of organisations (The Netherlands Red Cross, WASTE, OXFAM GB, the IFRC, and UNESCO-IHE) brought together for three days private manufacturers, humanitarian organizations, and researchers to foster the development of sanitation designs and systems to particularily tackle the aforementioned problems.

Presentations, a video and photos from the emergency sanitation workshop held in Delft, June 2012 are online! The workshop focussed on elevated latrines, latrine emptying and sludge disposal and treatment. You can share your impressions or opinions in the active discussion on the Forum.
